David Jonsson to Play T’Challa’s Son in Black Panther 3

This character was introduced in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. Jonsson will play an adult version of the prince.

The film is scheduled for release on December 15, 2028. Jonsson joined Ryan Coogler, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, and actors Letitia Wright and Winston Duke on stage. He stated he wanted to let the screen speak for itself while emphasizing the honor of joining the team.

Reactions from the Film’s Cast

Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, met Jonsson for the first time on the day of the announcement. He said he wanted to offer Jonsson the same support and security he had received when joining the franchise. Duke encouraged Jonsson to "come and play."

Michael B. Jordan, who was in Los Angeles, called the casting choice "brilliant" and said he was looking forward to seeing the film. No confirmation has been given regarding a potential return of his role in the third installment.

Letitia Wright, whose character Shuri inherited the mantle of Black Panther in Wakanda Forever, welcomed the announcement.

Context and Film Details

Ryan Coogler will direct the third installment of the saga, following Black Panther in 2018 and Wakanda Forever in 2022. Coogler had initially planned for Wakanda Forever to explore the relationship between T’Challa and his young son, a narrative arc abandoned after the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020.

David Jonsson gained recognition in the series Industry, broadcast on BBC and HBO, and in the 2023 film Rye Lane. He has also appeared in Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, the latter of which was mentioned by Coogler during the Comic-Con presentation. Black Panther 3 will be shot on 70mm film.
