The singer Carly Simon announced on July 27, 2026, that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In a letter addressed to her fans, the artist explains how she has learned to live with this diagnosis.
A Progressive Diagnosis and Variable Symptoms
Simon describes the early signs of the disease as persistent difficulty moving, even after three joint replacement surgeries on her knees and one hip. She mentions days marked by intense fatigue, where getting up from a deep armchair becomes a challenge. However, there are other moments when she can work and feel closer to her usual state.
The singer emphasizes that the disease is not limited to motor disorders. She discusses symptoms such as anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and a form of apathy. The latter, she clarifies, can create the impression of a complete lack of motivation, unrelated to laziness or sadness.
A Dual Medical Battle
Alongside her Parkinson’s diagnosis, Simon underwent surgery for a basal cell carcinoma on her face. Although the cancer was removed, she admits that the operation heightened her self-criticism about her appearance. She jokes about the contrast between this sensitivity and the success of her song You’re So Vain.
A Musical Return After Several Years
Despite these challenges, Carly Simon announces the release of Comes in Waves, her new album scheduled for August 14, 2026. Recorded at her home in Martha’s Vineyard, the project brings together compositions written over the years. Sally also designed the album cover.
The single Howl is already available. Simon notes that this creative return has given structure to days that sometimes lacked direction. She insists: « I have not stopped living, nor have I stopped working. »
A Career Marked by Recognition
Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Carly Simon had expressed her surprise at the honor at the time. Her new album follows Never Been Gone, released in 2009.
